would it help to tune ARCHIVE_LAG_TARGET in DG or ADGs

Hi guys   

  would it help to tune this init parameter ARCHIVE_LAG_TARGET in primary or standby or both to get or avoid Lag between in the Redo Log apply process.

  Does it help or not? It might be I'm miss-understanding the concept of this parameter? Could you clarify it for me and if it has some impact or improvement for some DG or ADG environment?
