Can a segment value from a parent configuration be passed to a child segment configuration

I am new to the configurator in E1 and want to use a parent item and pass information to a child item configuration to arrive at a price and proper values. I see parent and child segments in cross segment editing but not sure how it is used. I was reading the implementation guide but don't see any good examples of how this is done. Any help appreciated.
