How to stop assets from getting loaded in 9.2

Our asset management group manually adds assets as not all assets are tracked.

In our 9.2 testing they discovered new assets and we don't know where they came from.

Being new to asset management, I'm not sure where to start looking where assets get inserted.

Is there a configuration parameter somewhere to disable this or are we looking at a customization to stop batch inserts somewhere , and if so, where would be the most logical place to stop the insert?
