Can we use AME for Journal Approval

Is any one using AME for Journal Approval ?. Understand it is not currently supported for JE approval . We have very specific need to maintain the list of approvers  in addition to using supervisor hierarchy and we understand AME can handle approval list functionality . If not using AME, can we build similar capability through JE workflow approval ? Greatly appreciate any pointers or direction in this regard
