What is the significance of Alternate Ledgers in FA

Hi

Can someone tell me on the below question:

What is the significance of Alternate Ledgers and the functionality of Allow posting to GL and Enabled check box for these Alternate Ledgers under Ledger tab of Book Controls in Fixed Assets.
