Function of @Prior and @Next

If I use @prior function with "Begbalance" in Global Range, what month would it pick the value from? and Similarly if I use @Next with "Dec" (Last month of the year) in Global Range, in this case value what month would be picked up?

I tied but I got no values. It was just blank.
