Can anyone help me out the process of backing up Oracle Enterprise Linux files systems to a thrid pa

I'm using EMC Avamar backup storage solution and I'm trying to ensure that I have Oracle perferred way of backing up and restoring files if need for recovery. I see everything keep referencing RMAN, but from what I understand RMAN is provides the soluton to recover the databae. Can someone assist?
