Negative line items on change orders

I am trying to minimize the time that the SOV is locked by negative line items. Is there anyway to show the Commits Remaining Balance from the SOV?  Our workflows have several approval steps between the proposal and approval. The line items are not validated against Commits Remaining until the final approval. We frequently end up returning the change order to the proposal step and then going through all approval steps again.    We are able to select the line item from the SOV, but can we bring in other fields?
