How can we reduce the number of GL Code Combination Active account numbers in R12.1.3

Dear GL Guru,

We are currently running on Oracle EBS release  R12.1.3. We have GL, AP, AR, FA, PO,Treasury, iExpense, iProcurement and iSupplier applications.

Most of these oracle applications were implemented since 1994.

We are planning to upgrade to release 12.2.X by November of 2016.

Here is my question:

Our GL account numbers are made of 6 segments. The entity, business unit, cost cent, account, project and tbd.

We have currently about 280,000 active gl account numbers. We would like to reduce our gl account numbers to less than 10,000. I would like to know if any of you came across of this issue. I would like to know if there is any available document or options available for reducing our current GL account numbers.
