What is the best way to load forecast entries into MRP?

I've been using DataLoader to load forecast entries in MRP.  Is there an easier way?  I've read that there is an API, but I haven't been able to find any good documentation on how to use it.  Do you need to be a programmer to use an API or can it be set up like a journal entry (where the user uploads directly from a spreadsheet)?
