Open batch for multi period

Hi, I am running an open batch for multi period containing two data files for different regions.  In the manual it states that the only load options for this are: source load = append or replace, target load = accumulate or replace. However, I tried loading with R, M (replace, merge) and it seemed to work.  Could you please confirm the available options for open batch multi period and how they all differ? Thanks
