What are the steps to change COA number of segments ?

Hi ,

                Our customer wants to change the chart of account segments which is currently 7 segments to 4 segments .

  So is it ok if I create a new COA with 4 segments , and ledger and attach the same to existing Operating Unit . In this case how to deal with historical transactions . ?

  Can any one guide what should be the approach .

                           Hear we are using purchasing and payables module .
