RAC VS vmWare VS RAC on vmWARE

Hello

We are in the process of deploying a highly available 24 x 7 application and the initial plan was to use  2 node RAC

Out IT department is suggesting using vmWare Vmotion feature instead and not to use RAC

Another group is going even further suggesting deploying RAC on vmWare

What would be the main advantage of using RAC vs vmWare?

What is it that would make RAC beneficial over vmWARE 

Would not RAC on vmWARE be an overkill? can someone comment as to how having a RAC on vmWARE would make perfect sense?
