Out of Place Upgrade to 11.1.2.4

Has anyone had any success or experimented with on out-of-place upgrade to 11.1.2.4?  I have an 11.1.2.3.500 Planning environment and my users are hesitant to be offline while their prod 11.1.2.3.500 goes through a maintenance upgrade.  I've has success getting around this with 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.3.
