Material Cost Variance with kits

When a work order is completed for a kit periodically a variance is calculated for the material cost.  We are getting an entry for the material cost ($100) and then a variance is also calculating for ($100).  This doesn't happen all the time and I am unsure where to start looking.  Has anyone seen this happen?  It appears to only be happening with kit items.
