How to make values of a Value Set automatically generated?

I want to create a value set for Item Code. Upon adding values to Value Set system should automatically generate number for next row I create (e.g. if first row is 0001 then next row should automatically be 0002 and so on).

Please guide, because I want to make my Item creation process error free.
