upgrade ver 8.1.7 to 12c

We have a need to upgrade a database from version 8.1.7 to the latest oracle database version of 12c.

  Can someone point me in the correct direction to find documentation or a valid path to create the upgrade.

Our first thought was to produce a data dump of the database from 8.1.7 and push it into 12c. I'm assuming massive problems with PL-SQL.

Doing an upgrade step wise from major version to major version is not practical. It would take to long for the time period we will be allocated to complete the change. We're looking at a system that normally runs 24/7 with 500 users in and out of it routinely.
