Creating a physical standby of a primary database that is using ASM

Hi,

We're used in creating a physical standby from a primary with similar directory structure. But recently, we were required to do a physical standby db (for dataguard) in which the primary is using ASM but the target standby server is not. Is this possible or i need to use ASM also on our physical standby.
