Upgrade from 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4 on Windows - In-Place or Out-of-place?

I have a single instance installation on windows x64 currently running 11.2.0.3. and I wish to upgrade to 11.2.0.4. I have a production and a development server so I am able to test the upgrade before applying to production. I can take production offline for the time needed to do the upgrade.

I want to apply 13390677: 11.2.0.4.0 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER

It would obviously be simpler to do an in-place installation so that all the configuration is preserved and the home remains the same path.

I find the documentation confusing, as although 13390677 is a Patch Set it is ALSO a new installation. Clearly a PSU (e.g. 11.2.0.4.21) is an in-place installation,

Howdy, Stranger!
