Duplicate Asset Numbers with different case

At client site where they are implementing 12.2.4.

Noticed that we are able to create duplicate asset numbers, but with different case. For example, we could create ngs and NGS with all the other information on the record the same.

I don't have access to test this in another version, but was wondering if that is allowed. Just seems strange to me that it allows the same asset be created based on case.
