Item Branch - SHCN - Shipping Conditions Code

I thought I saw in some kanban documentation, the necessity of setting this code to K, for Kanban.  I can't find that particular document and I seem to be able to set up records in the kanban master without populating SHCN.

I'm interested to know what, if anything, is driven by populating SHCN with K?
