Can you serialize a Phantom item?

Here's the problem: We have an assembly with a Phantom component that makes two "tubs".  These tubs are serialized, but right now not in Oracle, and can be returned separately on the SO. So the Assembly with two tubs is shipped but the one tub may come back.  Is it possible to serialize the tubs when I perform the pull (WIP is Pull) so the RMA tub can be received?

As you can guess it's the "phantom" that is giving me the problem.
