How to implement Vanity URL after upgrade from .6

How to implement Vanity URL. I have upgarded from .6 to .8 and I have my own URL assembler which I used in .6; also my .6 templates depend on c and cid passed in pages. Kindly suggest how an I implement Vanity URL in my setup now after upgrade.
