RMAN restore validate

Currently we do a full backup of our production instance nightly and after the backup a restore database, archivelog, controlfile and spfile validate.  It has been brought up that this is using too many resources and we do not need it (sys admin).  The concern is that this is causing additional reads of the array and wearing it out for something they feel is not needed.  Would like to know suggestions on how validate should be used and how often.
