Is it allowed to update values for Descriptive Flexfields from backend?

Hi,

We are in a process of doing a major migration. Before that as an identifier we are adding a DFF on the records. However there are 14000+ records, and populating the DFF value for everything manually from frontend or using dataloader is not feasible. Are we allowed to update the values using back end script?

The migration is of customer records from Oracle to a different system.
