How does the special handling code work for UDC 00/41 (business units)?

My users want to use the Special Handling Code on UDC table 00/41 to hold more details related to the code.  Is this Special Handling Code used for anything particular?  Is there any harm in using this field for holding some additional details for the code?  Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
