What are the major "default" changes between client versions 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.2?

We have a 12.1.0.2 EE database (64-bit) running on AIX 7.1 (64-bit) which is the back-end for a records management product from HP (Records Management 8). In testing, the RM8 app works fine using the 11.2.0.4 64-bit client to connect to the 12c 64-bit database with very fast connect, search, sort and scroll activity.

As soon as we uninstall the 64-bit 11g client and install the preferred 64-bit 12c client, we can make the initial connection, but the app "freezes" immediately as soon as any search action is performed and eventually the Windows screen "greys out" with a "Not Responding" and we have to kill the process via Task Manager as control never returns.
