Why is the Asset Type field not available for edit in Basic Add?

An asset was created with Asset Type "050" Property via Express Add and capitalized without any acquisition details.  We now need to change the Asset Type as we are not using the Asset Property functionality for this asset.  However, the Asset Type field is grayed out and we are unable to make the change.  Why is the Asset Type field grayed out and not available for edit?
