Extract to included profile as a column?

We're being advised that we need to include the "profile" name in our extract.  For example, Date,Profile,acct,company,dept,amount.  The profile would be the concatenation of acct, company, dept.  For the life of me, why would anyone recommend that?  I can see pro's and con's but way more con's...  Is anyone following this approach?  Curious..
