Workflow invocation methods comparisons

Hello experts,

Very basic question here. I know a workflow can be called in different ways. Below are the mostly used ways.

a. BC/Applet user properties

b.Runtime events

c.Workflow policies

d. Server request bs

e. Scripting

The question always hits my mind is which approach should be used in which scenario. Can anyone explain me what are the ideal scenarious to use each of the above approaches to invoke a workflow.
