Unable to update role privileges for close date field

I have a user role that should be able to update any opportunity close date record but is unable to and gets error below.  

Need: I have some user roles that support our sales teams and thus they should be able to update opportunities that they do not own.  

Example: I have an inside sales role that allows the user to update closed dates on opportunities not owned by them.  This role works. I am unable to find how we have that setup in permissions under access profiles or role management.  I have failed to find a difference in page layout as well.
