Information about the tables invovle during the patching cycle across run and patch editions

Hi,

Can you please let me know the tables specific to run and patch editions, which get involve during the patching cycle.

As per my understanding patching tables are different across the editions and they got purged once the patching cycle is complete.

How Oracle database distinguish between run and patch edition?
