RMAN backups

Recently upgraded database from 11g to 12c. The DB has grown about 2G , using the same rman script to backup the upgraded database as to back up the old DB. Yet the backup has gone from slightly over 3G in the 11g DB to 15G in the 12c DB. What are the possible causes for this?
