Coarse or fine grained ASM

ASM

EMC VMAX SAN

redo log groups currently coarse grained in both our oltp and warehouse databases..  External redundancy.  Striped on the vmax.  We're going to create new redo log groups, any reason why we wouldnt move to fine grained?   Testing shows we get some improvements with reduction on the log file sync waits but wondering if anyone knows of any down sides to it?
