Can't Remove Audit Record

I've blanked out the values from the "record audit" box in the properties of a custom record, but it persists in adding records to the audit table, and errors out in the instance where the audit record's been deleted. I've tried altering the table, but it still behaves the same. Does anyone know what I need to do so it'll acknowledge the audit record's been removed?
