Clarification needed about ASCP plan types

Hi Experts,

I need some clarification about plan types. Please help me.

I'm quite clear on 'Manufacturing Plan'. This is for all MRP planned items usually at mfg/plant level (lower level items).

However top level items (FGs) and critical sub assemblies are  MPS planned items which will be considered in PRODUCTION PLAN. Usually this is needed for top level planning (ex, distribution centers or above)

But what is this MATSER PLAN and its associated attribute 'MPP Planned item' ? How does this MASTER PLAN differs from PRODUCTION PLAN? I have heard, this attribute MPP planned items refers to distribution planning in R12, but not sure.
