Change ATO item status with open sales order lines

We realize this functionality was changed a few releases ago. However every now and then we have a need to change the ATO flag on an item when there is open sales order lines. Right now we have that requirement and there are over 200 lines open...thus it would a crazy effort that you can never get ahead of t cancel all the lines...make the item attribute change and they reissue the sales order lines. Any clever ways around this? Support will tell you no. thanks in advance!

Currently we are on 12.1.3
