P6 8.3 Client Hangs After Login

After login to P6 8.3 client, the progress bar appears and appears to finish loading all tables. Once the progress bar goes away, P6 hangs and provides no error messages and no P6 interface. User must end task to close P6. I can log in to the EPPM web portal with the same user name and access data without error. Is it possible that P6 client is trying to open a default project or the last viewed project and is getting stuck due to corruption in the project data? If so, how can I get around bad project to access
