Adding node(s) to RAC Database

Hi All

In a (11g or 12c) RAC database, does adding a node requires any sort of downtime?

we are working on a project to convert a single stand alone database to one node RAC aware database so that we can add more nodes in future if required but want to make sure that when the need arise we will be able to add node(s) to it on the fly without any downtime
