How to use LDAP callout to o=piServerDb suffix as whitelist

I have found references to this functionality supported and unsupported all the way back to messaging 5.2

Has anyone come up with a how-to recipe or cheat sheet to successfully configure/deploy this? 

After starting with the documented examples of SIEVE_EXTLISTS mapping table, a Sieve rule to trigger

that table, and enabling an ACI in LDAP to assure the messaging can search the o=piServerDb suffix,

we are getting an unrecognized list "pab" when testing our configuration.

Here is a dump of a contact that exists on the "To:" address of our tests:

dn: piEntryID=e14d3546d091c,piPStoreOwner=john,o=domain.com,o=PiServerDb
