Flex accounting: What does the Item Number field do?

Hello MOSC,

For flexible accounting for DMAAI 4152, I want to flex the business unit segment. I know how to do it, but I wonder what the Item Number field does. The help text on this field, alias EV05, is "An X in this field indicates that this segment forms part of the item number." What does this mean? If I put an X in this field, how will it affect the records that I created to flex the business unit? Please see the attached MS Word document for a screen capture of the setup.
