What is the best practice to replace an instance in a field service scenario?

Business case:

I have a product at the customer site (and in IB). This product (which a configuration) needs to be replaced. A field engineer is sent and replaces the item from its stock (configuration is either the same or is slightly different)

On the original item is a contract, which needs to stay activate. The returned item needs to be end-dated on the contract, the replaced item is the new item on the contract.

I've read these notes: note 359147.1 and note 971366.1

Especially the last note describes exactly what I try to accomplish, but with the difference I want to do it through debrief (which doesn't acknowledge the non-source reference).
