Risk of Entering Current Month Transactions While Prior Period is Still Open

We're having an issue that is preventing the depreciation run from successfully completing so we can't close the period.  We have a patch that looks like it may resolve the issue.  Here's our problem, since this is a live production R12 instance we can't deploy the patch until our normal monthly production update cycle.  My question is this, if the prior period remains open, what's the risk, if any, of entering the current month's asset additions and transactions?  Trying to determine if we need to hold off on creating any current month's transactions until the prior period is closed.
