How to rewind the journal approval process

We currently don't use the conventional journal entry approval routing in Oracle EBS. We have the user's manager approve it using the Zoom function before posting.

If the manager/user clicks the approval button, the journal will go into "limbo". Since we don't have any approvals the journal will keep going up the hierarchy (CFO, CEO) and then it still wont be approved.

We had this happen, we are wondering if there is a way using workflow or something else to "rewind" it
