How to use ATO Model Items on Consignment

We are trying to find a way to use the Consignment flow for our ATO Models.

Our Marketing Dept usually offers equipment to our final customers in order to test it prior to sell it. The way we are working right now is : create an SO (the customer is ourselves), configure the item, pick and release the SO using a release rule that leaves the configurated item on an specific subinventory. The SO is usually backordered and cancelled later on.

I thought of using the Internal Orders flow, but I cannot use it with ATO Models, because it is not the right BOM type.
