Invoking External Application using XML Gateway service in VBC

Dear All,

I would like to know how to invoke external systems using XML Gateway service(above all i want to invoke external application in VBC without writing script). As per the bookshelf i observed only service name as XML Gateway service and service parameters will be given.Do we need to configure any WF which takes the input parameters and maps it to the request message before triggering the outbound.If not, is there any way to pass the input parameters in the request message to external system by using XML gateway service itself. 

Please suggest how to configure VBC with XML Gateway service and any material is helpful.
