Grid Infrastructure BASE and HOME directory structure

Hi,

I am little confused about new suggestions for BASE and HOME directory structure for GRID installation. I always thought that base should be sub directory of home location, Now, oracle is suggesting base cannot be sub directory of HOME? 

Present

BASE=/ora/app/grid

HOME=+ASM:/ora/app/grid/product/11.2.0.4/grid

New suggestion:

BASE=/ora/app/grid

HOME=/ora/app/12.1.0.2/grid
