Planning Horizon Periods

I am working with R3483 and I'm a bit confused on the planning horizon periods processing options.  Do these only affect the time series or should they also affect the MPS/MRP messages that are created?  If I set these processing options to only use monthly buckets, the time series only shows monthly buckets, but the MPS and MRP messages are still created based on daily buckets.
