To use a SHA2 certificate with our Purchase Order cXML transmission, does SSL have to be enabled?

We've been using certificates to transmit our purchase orders with our vendor for a few years.  They have recently switched to SHA2 certificates, and now we can no longer connect to transmit the POs although we've verified our prereqs and have the new certificates installed in the CACerts Java KeyStore.  Does SSL still have to be enabled even though we're using the Java KeyStore for our certificates?  I've read all of the MOS notes I can find and am still quite confused...
