Excluding Activities from Resource Histograms

We are looking to add a new 'type' of work to our project schedules.  Although this work uses the same resources as our regular work, we do not want to show this new type in our resource histograms.  We have tried adding our 'special' work to a calendar with no working days until 2020.  Unfortunately, this pushed the start date out to the first time work was identified on that calendar.  We tried adding constraints, but that did not help.  We've also tried using the 'open projects only' function with filters on, but due to the nature of our projects,
